PWHL Seattle
Starting Monday, Seattle’s entry into the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) will be making the rounds this week in the local media. A handful of the expansion franchise’s top players, its head coach, and the club’s general manager have been made available during a special tour.
Headlining the ongoing event will be Hilary Knight, an American women’s hockey icon who’s won one Olympic Gold Medal and three Silver Medals as a forward for Team USA. She’s also helped the country win nine International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women’s World Championships in 15 visits while leading the country in overall goals, assists and points.
Knight has posted 147 points in 109 international matches and is the current captain of Team USA.
She joins Seattle after two seasons as captain and leading scorer for the Boston Fleet.
Summerland, BC native Steve O’Rourke, who played major junior hockey for the Tri-City Americans between 1991 and 1993 and later coached as an assistant or associate in the Western Hockey League, is the Seattle franchise’s first head coach.
Earlier in his career O’Rourke served as an assistant coach for the Abbotsford Heat, then a Calgary Flames affiliate, in the American Hockey League.
The general manager for Seattle is Meghan Turner, who, like Knight, comes over from the Boston Fleet. Turner played four seasons of college hockey at Quinnipiac University and later played in the now defunct Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL).
Keep your eyes and ears open for the ladies as they make the hockey media rounds. Seattle Hockey Insider will provide stories, interviews, and insights.
