Red Wings 5, Kraken 4 In A Shoot-Out

Red Wings 5, Kraken 4

The Red Wings came in with a record of 14-4-and-1 since head coach Todd McLellan took over, which included a six-game win streak. It continued.

Detroit picked up where it’s been leaving off.

Lucas Raymond, after getting knocked down moments before in the right wing circle, deflected home a Dylan Larkin shot that was headed for the right goal post. The Winged Wheel was up 1-0 at the 3:36 mark.

Six minutes later the Kraken gained some momentum following a successful penalty kill. On the even strength shift that followed, Matty Beniers ripped a one-timer from the low slot that beat Detroit goalie Cam Talbot clean. The goal came off a beautiful feed from the left wing corner by Kaapo Kakko.

For much of the period the Red Wings played a dump-and-chase game, trying to establish a forecheck. Not much was happening until Chandler Stephenson tripped Simon Edvinsson along the end boards and Detroit went on its second power play.

Off a Larkin face-off win and an assist to Alex DeBrincat, D-man Moritz Seider picked a corner from the very high slot to give the visitors its second lead of the game.

It took Seattle just 6:29 into the 2nd period to tie it back up. Shane Wright extended his point streak to six games with his 10th goal of the season, this one off the rush from the right wing circle with a snipe top shelf, short side.

The rush came off a Detroit turnover at the opposite blueline when Kraken defenseman Cale Fleury dumped Michael Rasmussen with a knee-to-knee hit. Detroit head coach McLelland was none-too-happy. The odd man rush going the other way ensued.

Seattle had two goals with just seven shots on goal.

Detroit took its third lead of the game at 12:07 of the 2nd period on the power play. A clean face-off win by Andrew Copp in the right circle led to Jonatan Berggren going high blocker on Joey Daccord from the slot.
The Red Wings had the 3-2 lead with the help of two goals with the 4th best man advantage in the NHL. Seattle had yet to earn a power play.
When the Kraken finally picked up a PP chance, they came close to scoring, but not cigar. Moments later, Detroit earned its fourth of the night and also failed. Unfortunately for the home team fans, the Red Wings scored just seconds after the man advantage died.
Elmer Soderblom scored on a rebound just 3:21 into the 3rd period to make it 4-2.
Wright answered with his 2nd of the night and 11th of the season for the Kraken seven minutes later. He batted home a puck low shortside while being harassed, rushing through the left wing circle. The partisans were back in it.
Stephenson rewarded them off the rush as time waned. He flew through the left wing circle and snuck a puck through the legs of Talbot to tie the match with 2:56 remaining.
4-4 through regulation.
OT
The highlight was an early Daccord pad save. The crowd chanted “JOEY” all night long. Both teams threatened but failed to light the lamp. Brandon Montour had a mad solo rush for Seattle in the final seconds but failed to get a shot off.
