Kraken Lose 3-2
The name of the game is goalie. Monday night the Seattle Kraken lost to the New Jersey Devils, a team that arrived at Climate Pledge Arena with a four-game losing streak. They had lost every game on what will be a six-game trip when they play the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.
Devils netminder Jacob Markstrom was the reason the losing skid wasn’t extended to five in Seattle.
The 34-year-old Swede made 21 saves in the game, a number of them spectacular, including two mind-benders in the third period to preserve the visitor’s lead. He robbed Eeli Tolvanen and Matty Beniers just minutes apart, both with diving stops to his left, the latter involving reaching back and knocking a puck out of midair with the blade of his stick. It was a sure goal.
The match was a see-saw affair up until then. Dawson Mercer opened the scoring for the Devils in the 1st period, only to have Seattle D-man Adam Larsson answer.
Paul Cotter gave New Jersey a second lead with just 25-seconds remaining in the 2nd period, before Shane Wright tied the game with a power play goal at 1:24 of the 3rd.
Devils veteran forward Ondrej Palat scored the game winner just 37-seconds later.
Leave it to the snake bit Kraken to run into a red hot goalie. Yet another reason for yet another loss. Seattle sits well out of the playoff picture, four games below .500.
