Kraken Survive in Dallas, 5-4 In Overtime

Enough was enough for the Seattle Kraken in Dallas against the Stars on Tuesday night. The Kraken had their legs, they had a bit of revenge on their minds, and they received excellent goaltending from American Hockey League call-up Joey Daccord.

With Philipp Grubauer ailing and Martin Jones watching from the bench. Daccord picked up his second win in just his second NHL start of the season. He won by the same score in regulation on the road against the Calgary Flames back on November 1st.

Bottom line, it was clear from the start of this one that the visiting Kraken had the energy that the home team Stars, just back from a long road trip, didn’t possess. At least early on.

Stars TV color commentator Daryl Reaugh said it best after the second period:

“The Kraken have played excellent hockey, fast hockey, in both directions.”

Despite all that, the veteran, first place, Central Division Dallas Stars, very much made a game of it in the third period.

Kraken Goal Scorers:

1st Period

1-0 Kraken – Even Strength – Brandon Tanev (14) from Daniel Sprong and Carson Soucy, 2:32

Tanev went hard to the front of the net and deflected home a perfect centering pass from Sprong.

2-1 Kraken – Even Strength – Daniel Sprong (17) from Brandon Tanev and Adam Larsson, 12:20

On the left wing on a 2-on-1 rush, Sprong kept the puck and wired it five-hole on goalie Jake Oettinger.

2nd Period

3-1 Kraken – Even Strength – Jared McCann (34) from Jordan Eberle and Jamie Oleksiak, 1:37

On another 2-on-1, Eberle made a beautiful backhand pass from the left wing circle to McCann in front who reached and one-handed it while going hard to the net ahead of a back-checker.

3rd Period

As expected, the Stars put on a comeback push in the 3rd period and picked up a goal from Wyatt Johnston at 3:47 to cut the Seattle lead to one.

4-2 – Even Strength – Brandon Tanev (15) from Morgan Geekie and Carson Soucy, 14:03

Tanev’s shot from the high slot changed direction off a Stars defender and zipped past Oettinger.

After having a goal reviewed and waived off for goalie interference with just more than five minutes remaining in the game, the Stars would score a legit one to cut it to 4-3 with just over three minutes left. It came from Joe Pavelski with an extra attacker on the ice.

Jamie Benn would score with less than one second remaining in the 3rd period, again with an extra attacker on the ice.

Overtime

5-4 Kraken – Even Strength (3 on 3) – Adam Larsson (6) from Jared McCann and Alexander Wennberg, 1:52

Larsson took a lead pass off the right wing board, cut to the net and made a beautiful deke for the game winner.

Dallas outshot Seattle 29-27. Power plays: Seattle 0-for-2, Dallas 1-for-4.

Kraken 3 Stars:

1) Brandon Tanev – A beast on the defensive end with 7 blocked shots, two hits and the OT game winning goal.

2) Brandon Tanev – Two goals and an assist. Heck of a night for the grinder.

3) Joey Daccord – Turned some management heads with a very strong 25 save performance.
