Kraken Escape, Beat Red Wings 5-4 In OT

OT FINAL: Seattle Kraken 5, Detroit Red Wings 4

Netminders were Martin Jones for the visiting Kraken and Ville Husso for the Red Wings. Jones was replaced by Philipp Grubauer after Detroit’s third goal.

Following a win against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday, this was game two of a four-game trip and Seattle took advantage of a quiet, lightly crowded Little Caesar’s Arena early on.

Yanni Gourde of the Kraken and Adam Erne of the Red Wings, former teammates with the Tampa Bay Lightning, dropped the mitts at the 1:00 mark to get a little energy going and Seattle would score first just 12-seconds later.

Kraken Goal Scorers:

1st Period

1-0 Kraken – Even Strength – Jared McCann (28) from Jordan Eberle and Matty Beniers, 1:12

Off a beautiful cross crease feed from Eberle, McCann ripped home his new career high from below the right circle.

2-1 Kraken – Even Strength – Oliver Bjorkstrand (12) from Alexander Wennberg and Jaden Schwartz, 5:33

A Bjorkstrand shot, a rebound, and then a centering pass back to Bjorkstrand who went to the net to redirect it home.

3-1 Kraken – Even Strength – Jared McCann (29) from Vince Dunn and Eeli Tolvanen, 12:20

His slapper from the top of the left wing circle deflected off Red Wings D-man Ben Chiarot and 5-hole on Husso.

Both Detroit goals in the 1st period were very preventable. Jones should have stopped Chiarot’s wrist shot from the left wing circle on the first one and Morgan Geekie’s bad pass up the middle was a turnover that led to a delayed penalty call and a goal from defenseman Moritz Seider.

2nd Period

4-3 Kraken – Even Strength – Jaden Schwartz (14) from Jordan Eberle and Matty Beniers, 6:17

Another beautiful cross-crease pass, this time converted at the left wing post.

Detroit would tie it 4-4 following a horrendous turnover by Wennberg, a blind backhand pass in his own end. The game would stay that way through regulation.

OT

5-4 Kraken – Power Play (4-on-3) – Oliver Bjorkstrand (13) from Jared McCann and Justin Schultz, 3:33

Bjorkstrand’s second of the night, shot from a few steps inside the point, found its way past Schwartz’s screen.

Seattle outshot the Red Wings 37-29. Power plays: Seattle 1-for-5, Detroit 0-for-3.

Kraken 3 Stars:

1) Oliver Bjorkstrand – Two goals, including the game winner in OT, and led team with seven shots on goal.

2) Jared McCann – Scored twice, new career high 29, and had numerous chances at the hat trick. 5 shots on goal.

3) Jaden Schwartz – Goal and an assist with three shots on goal and the screen on the OT winner.
